For two weeks in August, as part of the celebration of Canada’s 150 years, Cultural Services of Strathcona County (including Gallery@501, Smeltzer House and Festival Place) will be collaborating to bring to life a ‘Chautauqua Tent’. The event kicks off on August 5th and runs every day until August 20th. Chautauqua was an adult education movement highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauqua Tents brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, preachers and specialists of the day. We will erect a large tent 120ft x 40ft in the parking lot of Festival Place in the heart of Broadmoor Park where we plan to showcase excellence in Canadian performing and Visual Arts. This will be a free event for the public with community groups and local artists giving performances, demonstrations and workshops during the day and professional musicians and speakers performing/presenting in the evening.

On Saturday the 19th of August we will be running a ‘Artisan’s Market’ in the tent from 10.30am – 4.00pm. We are inviting local artists and artisans to purchase a table at the event for $20 to sell their work (Gallery@501 Members are able to purchase a table for $10).

The idea of the Chautauqua tent is education and community so we are also looking for artists/artisans that might be interested in doing a demonstration at the market. This would mean interacting with the public and showing them your technique. You would still be able to sell your work and if you are willing to have a demonstration there will be no charge for the table. We will have limited volunteers available at the event so if you are interested in having a demonstration but need assistance we may be able to accommodate requests on a case by case basis.

We would love to hear from all interested parties as soon as possible. However, the deadline for booking a table for the Chautauqua Tent Artisan’s Market is Friday June 30th.

If you have any questions or if you would like to discuss this opportunity further please don’t hesitate to get in contact.
